Southern Vic Champs Again

The Southern Victoria Vikings claim their first Provincial Championship since 1984 as they hold off the Canterbury Celtics in a great opening game of the NBIAA Final 12 at TD Station on Friday afternoon. The Vikings won 62 – 58.

Southern Victoria got off to a slow start as they fell behind 8 – 0 the start the first quarter but they went to work to tie it at 10 before Canterbury grabbed a slim 16 – 14 lead after 10 minutes. The second quarter was all Southern Vic as they began to dominate the boards and control the game. Viking take the quarter 21 – 9 and headed into halftime with a 35 – 25 advantage.

Canterbury found some life in the third the their fans helped to energize them to a 17 – 9 advantage in the quarter and we headed to the fourth quarter with the Vikings leading 44 – 42. The final frame was a back and forth affair with the Celtics grabbing a 4 point lead at one point but with overtime looking like a possibility, Southern Victoria hit some key shots and grabbed some important rebounds. Southern Vic won the quarter 18 – 16 and the game 62 – 58.

Southern Victoria’s rebounding advantage allowed them to get 99 shots off, compared to 69. Southern Victoria were led by Ainsley Green with 22 points, and player of the game Allyson Dickson who added 15 points and 14 boards to collect the double-double. Canterbury were led by their player of the game, Kyla Jewett who scored 13 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists. Aly Dickison scored 13, while Tanika Pawsey added 12 points and 6 rebounds.
