The 2019-2020 ‘A’ Girls Championship game will be a rematch of last year’s battle between the Hartland Huskies and the Harvey Lakers. This rivalry will be continued on the floor of TD Station for this season’s title game and we cannot wait for Saturday afternoon.
This game will feature the #4 ranked Hartland Huskies against the defending champs, #1 ranked Harvey High Lady Lakers. The Lakers have not lost to a single A team this season. The Lakers will be defending their crown in search of their 10th title on the girls’ side. This is their fourth consecutive trip to the Final 12. For the Hartland Community School Huskies, they were here last year and were in it for three quarters before things fell apart in the fourth. The Huskies are going after their 8th single A title to go along with their 2008-2009 ‘AA’ championship banner.
The Hartland Huskies will be led by All-stars Laura Nancekievill and Taylor Oakes. The Defending champs will be led by All-stars Kate MacLean and Alexis Saunders. The supporting staff on each team is very talented and deep.
These two rivals only met twice this season. First, it was an early November meeting at a tournament in Harvey. Harvey won that game by 14, 65 – 51. The second meeting was in the Regional Final. Harvey won that contest 75 – 51.
The Hartland Huskies have been underestimated for most of the season in the rankings and predictions of the NB Hoop News team. They have continued to persevere and push through to show everyone that they are better than they are given credit for. We give them their credit today. They have shown time and time again that they deserve to be here and let’s look at their path to get here. The Huskies went 5 – 1 in league play from the West. They were tied for first but held the tie-breaking advantage over Canterbury. At the South West Regional, they played Campobello and won that one with ease 82 – 34. Next, they would get the Harvey Lakers in the Regional final. As we mentioned above Harvey took that game by 24 which sent the Huskies to the North East Sectional. In the Sectionals Hartland took out #5 ranked Petitcodiac 70 – 36 and set themselves up with a date against the #2 Caledonia Regional Tigers. Hartland came out and handled the Tigers’ pressure and handed them an 83 – 57 loss on home court as the Hartland Huskies are headed back to TD Station for one last game.
Harvey made it to TD Station by way of an 8 – 0 record in the Southern League. Next, at Regionals they made quick work of Canterbury 64 – 39 and played that 75 – 51 game with Hartland in the Regional final. With Harvey now hosting the sectional at home they would be two wins away from getting back to defend their title at TD Station. First up for Harvey was a game with Dalhousie Regional. This was all Harvey, all night. 105 – 22. In the Sectional final, they would get a tough Stanley team but even Stanley could not do anything against this Laker team. Harvey 97 – Stanley 40. Next stop – TD Station.
One game, winner takes all. Get ready for some magic at TD Station on Saturday at 1:00 PM
