Sectionals Set For This Weekend As Final 12 Draws Closers

The Final 12 New Brunswick Interscholastic Athletic Association boys and girls basketball championships are creeping closer. The provincial sectional tournaments will be held this weekend in numerous sites across the province at the AAA, AA and A levels. All are single elimination games at the North-East and South-West maps.

Win two games this weekend and you’re off to the NBIAA Final 12 at Saint John’s Harbour Station from February 24 to 25. Easier said than done.

Let’s have a look at the sectional tournaments this weekend on Friday and Saturday for boys and girls. All Friday games are at 6:30 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. and sectional finals are set for 1 p.m. Saturday.

 

Boys AAA

South-West

The Leo Hayes High Lions have spent most of the season atop the NB Hoops Report poll as Number 1. They get a chance to showcase their skills at home this weekend, welcoming the South-West sectional to the Lion’s Den in Fredericton.

Opening game action has Moncton High Purple Knights and Kennebecasis Valley High Crusaders of Quispamsis locking horns. Leo Hayes faces Riverview High Royals.

North-East

Moncton’s Bernice MacNaughton High Highlanders spent a bit of time as the #1 seed this year, but do get to host the North-East sectional. Play kicks off with Saint John High Greyhounds and Miramichi Valley High Pulamoo followed by the Highlanders and Fredericton High Black Kats.

 

Boys AA

South-West

The road to Harbour Station goes through Florenceville-Bristol. Tantramar Regional High Titans of Sackville and Rothesay High Red Hawks meet in the opener followed by host Carleton North High Stars and Bathurst High Phantoms. Carleton North enters as NB Hoops Report’s top-ranked team.

North-East

James M. Hill High Tommies of Miramichi hosts the North-East sectional. Woodstock High Thunder and Salisbury’s JMA Armstrong High Cougars play the first game while the Tommies entertain the home crowd against Fundy High Mariners of St. George in the nightcap.

 

Boys A

South-West

Harvey High Lakers are #1 according to NB Hoops Report at the A level and are at home this weekend to try and make it three straight Final 12 appearances. Play begins with Cambridge-Narrows School Huskies and Canterbury High Trojans followed by the Lakers and Blackville School Eagles.

North-East

Petitcodiac Regional High Panthers roll out the welcome mat for the North-East sectional. Fredericton Christian Academy Eagles and Minto High Tigers meet in the opener followed by the Panthers and McAdam High Warriors.

 

Girls AAA

South-West

Sussex Regional High Sonics are the #1 ranked team in the province by NB Hoops Report and they get to stay at the Sonic Dome for South-West play.

Action begins Friday with Kennebecasis Valley High Crusaders of Quispamsis and Miramichi Valley High Pulamoo followed by the Sonics and Moncton’s Harrison Trimble High Trojans.

North-East

Riverview High Royals get to stay at home for North-East play. Fredericton High Black Kats and Moncton’s Bernice MacNaughton High Highlanders provide the lid-lifter followed by Riverview and Saint John High Greyhounds.

 

Girls AA

South-West

Woodstock High Thunder is ranked No. 1 by NB Hoops Report and they’re at home in Carleton County for South-West action. Miramichi’s James M. Hill High Tommies and St. Stephen High Spartans open the fray followed by Woodstock and Campbellton’s Sugarloaf Senior High Bruins.

North-East

Sackville is the scene for the North-East sectional with Tantramar Regional High Titans as host. Carleton North High Stars of Florenceville-Bristol and Salisbury’s JMA Armstrong High Cougars launch play and Tantramar and Rothesay High Red Hawks close opening night.

 

Girls A

South-West

John Caldwell School Golden Knights of Grand Falls are No. 1 by NB Hoops Report and are home near the Falls and Gorge for South-West action.

Stanley High Blue Devils and Rothesay Netherwood School Riverhawks are the first game and the Golden Knights meet Belleisle Regional High Bears in Game 2.

North-East

Hillsborough and its Caledonia Regional High Tigers welcome three teams for North-East play. Game 1 has Harvey High Lakers and Moncton Christian Academy Eagles followed by the Tigers and Grand Manan Community School Breakers.
