Second Half Defence Energizes Blue Knights Comeback

The #1 ranked Kennebecasis Valley High School looked down and out after 20 minutes, but came out with a swarming defence in the 3rd quarter to launch a come from behind performance for the ages to win for the first time in 37 years.

The #3 ranked Saints came out on fire as the shot 77% in the quarter and kept Kennebecasis Valley from getting good looks. It was 24 – 10 after one quarter. St. Mac’s continued to control things in the second, as the outscored the Blue Knights 15 – 11 for a 39 – 21 halftime lead. It was beginning to look like a double championship night for St. Mac’s.

Kennebecasis Valley came out with a sense of defensive urgency in the third quarter and that defense led to scoring, and lots of it. KV took the third 26 – 5 and completely erased the halftime deficit to lead the Saints 47 – 44 with 10 minutes remaining. In the fourth it was beginning to look like the Saints would keep this close down to the end, but the Blue Knights continued their electric play and would win the final quarter 22 – 12, winning the game 69 – 56 to complete the comeback win.

Kennebecasis Valley were led by NBIAA All-Star Jack Way, who scored 28 points. Koichi Sahara added 13 points, 13 rebounds, 7 assists, and 5 steals. Grade 10 player, Heath Harris added 10 points and the anchor of the defence, Nick Hersey added 4 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists, and 8 steals.

St. Malachy’s were led by Player of the Game Marcus Lyons who scored 17 points, he was helped out by Ciaran McIntyre with 15 points and Jack Gimby who added 12 points
