Highlanders Celebrate First Boy’s Title

A title to remember.

The first title, in fact.

Moncton’s Bernice MacNaughton High Highlanders looked unstoppable early and withstood a gritty, persistent Fredericton High Black Kats comeback bid to win their first-ever Final 12 New Brunswick AAA title on Saturday night at Harbour Station.

Bernice MacNaughton tamed Fredericton, 73-69 at Saint John’s Harbour Station to cut the nets.

The Highlanders appeared ready to run away and hide from the Black Kats, building a 22-14 lead after a quarter and thwarting multiple bids by Fredericton to draw even.

The Black Kats actually outscored the Highlanders in the second and third quarters, but it would not be enough to overcome skilled Bernice MacNaughton, paced by their senior Sam Maillet.

The commit to Dalhousie University Tigers scored 24 points, many in spectacular fashion and had 13 rebounds to power the Highlanders.

Dakota Ouwendyk had 20 and Alex Dool pumped 16.

Industrious Norm Burry had 15 for Fredericton. Jay Hwang scored 12 and had 10 rebounds and Malcolm Christie scored 13. Keighan Hamilton had 11.
