SAINT JOHN, N.B. – The best-of- five came to an end Saturday. After splitting four games this season, the Fredericton High Black Kats and two-time defending champion Kennebecasis Valley High Crusaders of Quispamsis met with everything on the line, meeting at Harbour Station in the New Brunswick Interscholastic Athletic Association AAA Final 12 championship.
When it was done, advantage Fredericton. The Black Kats shook off a wobbly start – that was true for both teams – overcame an early 2-0 deficit and never trailed again, battling to a 63-43 win in front of approximately 2,800 fans. Both team were guilty of missed chances and turnovers early in the contest, witness Fredericton holding a 9-2 lead after the first quarter.
The Black Kats pressured the Crusaders with an aggressive defence and would stretch their lead to 25-
14 at the half. “We felt good in terms of the way our girls responded and they settled into an aggressive groove early
in the second quarter,” said Fredericton head coach Kevin Daley. “We were able to get some turnovers and turned those into points through quality possessions. It was great to see all of our players contribute whether it was offensively or through shut down defence.”
Kennebecasis Valley found its swagger and made a bit of a third quarter run, but Fredericton would
carry a 44-27 lead into final quarter and nailed it down from there. Lucina Beaumont had 15 points for the Black Kats and Torrie Janes had nine. Rachel Farwell had 15 for the Crusaders.
